How to write a Will

You can usually write your will in five steps.

1. Choose how to write your Will

There are different ways to write a Will. You can:

• use a solicitor

• use an online Will-writing service

• use Cancer Research UK's Will-Writing Service

The best option for you will depend on your circumstances and the level of support you need.

2. Prepare the information you need

Gather information about your finances and possessions, including:

• details of your property

• information about your savings and investments

• details of valuable possessions

Use our Will information worksheet to prepare for writing your will. Record key details you'll need when writing your will. You can save or print the worksheet and bring it to your solicitor appointment.

3. Decide what you'd like to leave

Decide what you want your Will to cover.

This includes:

• what you want to leave

• who should receive it

• any gifts to charities

4. Add the details to your Will

Once you've decided what you'd like to leave, you'll need:

• the correct names of people and organisations

• charity details, if leaving a gift

• clear descriptions of what you want to leave

5. Write your Will

Write your Will using your chosen method. For example:

• ask a solicitor to prepare it

• use an online Will service

• use our Will-Writing Service at no cost to you

6. Once you've written your Will

• check that all details are correct

• sign it so it is legally valid

• store it safely

• let your executors know where it is
