Diet problems with cancer

Types of diet problems

The side effects of cancer and its treatments might cause problems with your eating, digestion and weight.

Taste changes and loss of appetite

Cancer treatment can cause taste changes and a loss of appetite.

Weight loss

Losing weight when you are not trying to is a common symptom in people with cancer.

Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

Some cancers and their treatments can cause a sore mouth and throat. This can make chewing and swallowing difficult.

Digestion problems

Cancer or its treatment can cause digestion problems such as constipation, diarrhoea, sickness (nausea) and sometimes a blocked bowel.

Cachexia (wasting syndrome)

Cachexia is a complex change in the body, causing you to lose weight despite eating normally.

Not enough fluid in your body (dehydration)

Cancer and some of its treatments can lead to you not having enough fluid in your body (dehydration).
