Causes of cancer

Hormones and cancer

There are lots of things to consider when deciding whether the pill or HRT is right for you. Your doctor can help you make an informed choice.

Our natural hormone levels change across our lifetime, because of things like puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

Taking the pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) affects our hormone levels and cancer risk.

Does hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increase cancer risk?

HRT can increase the risk of some cancers, but for most people, the benefits of taking HRT outweigh the risks. If you are thinking of starting or stopping HRT speak to your doctor.

Does the contraceptive pill increase cancer risk?

The pill increases the risk of some cancers and decreases the risk of others. Remember, there are other things that can affect your risk of cancer more than the pill. Speak to your doctor about what is right for you.
