Getting diagnosed with anal cancer

See your GP if you have symptoms that could be due to anal cancer. They will ask you about your general health and examine you. This helps them decide if you need any tests.

Your GP may also refer you to a specialist.

Seeing your GP when you have symptoms of anal cancer

See your GP if you notice a change that isn't normal for you. Or if you have any possible symptoms of anal cancer.

Referral to a specialist for anal cancer

You may be referred to a specialist if you have symptoms that could be due to anal cancer. This might be an urgent suspected cancer referral.

Tests for anal cancer

You might have a number of tests to check for anal cancer. This includes an examination of your anus, scans and taking samples of tissue. This is called a biopsy.

Screening for anal cancer

There is no national screening programme for anal cancer in the UK. Talk to your GP if you think you are at higher risk of getting anal cancer.
